Lebanon Hosts the Sixth Mediterranean Forest Week

Beirut, 4 April 2019 – Under the patronage of His Excellency the Minister of Agriculture Dr. Hassan Lakiss, the  the Sixth edition of the Mediterranean Forest Week (VIth MWF) held its meeting  at the Grand Hills Hotel, Broumana from  1-5 April 2019 and grouped 215 participants from 30 countries representing many institutions, organizations, governmental bodies. The week covered important themes related to the Paris agreement shedding the light on the countries achievements and contributions to mitigate and adapt to climate change.  Practitioners and success stories were shared with the audience, side events have showcased successful initiatives occurring in the region.

The Participants visited the Horsh Ehden Nature Reserve, and witnessed the richness of the Cedars landscape, they were briefed on the challenges facing the nature reserve while also sharing their best practices in combating climate change effect. The participants enjoyed the beauty of the landscape and tasted local and authentic products.

In this occasion the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN has released a new Publication titled: “Guide to the Classical biological control of insects and pests in planted and natural forests”. A hands on practical guide for practitioners and set up systems to control forest exotic pests.

The final day concluded with High level segment and Silva Mediterranea committee meeting to   elect new bureau members.

Held every two years, the Mediterranean Forest Week is a key platform for regional forestry related cooperation and dialogue between all relevant stakeholders. In its sixth edition, the Mediterranean Forest Week showcased forest-based solutions that are important in protecting the social, environmental, economic and cultural value of the goods and services already provided by Mediterranean forests.
